MCHENRY, ILL., May 11, 2018 – Follett today announced it has successfully completed the Ed-Fi Data Standard Certification for its Aspen Student Information System (SIS). Developed by a community of ed-tech experts and technologists, the Ed-Fi Data Standard is a set of rules for the collection, management, and organization of educational data that allows multiple systems to exchange this information seamlessly.

Follett’s Aspen Student Information System hosts and manages student data, safely and securely stores data such as class schedules, student performance, health records, and athletic eligibility, and allows educators to closely monitor student progress, implement new curriculum, and conveniently communicate with parents.

According to Follett’s George Gatsis, the Ed-Fi Data certification is another step to ensure educators have the right tools at the right times to make the best decisions possible.

“By certifying the Aspen SIS against the Ed-Fi Data Standard we are giving our customers a powerful new feature that will enable multiple systems to connect seamlessly with Aspen,” said Gatsis, senior vice president of technology platforms. “This allows them to select the technology tools that best support their students and enables the data to flow securely from the SIS to instructional tools. Our priority has always been to support educators, and by certifying on the Ed-Fi Data Standard we are taking another important step to empower teachers with data.”

While the SIS remains the center of school technology systems, educators today are taking advantage of many highly specialized teaching and learning tools. Connecting these systems through a data standard, is essential for seamless integration between the SIS and other technology platforms. By using a SIS that is certified on the Ed-Fi Data Standard, districts, schools and educators now have the ability to plug in the tools and applications of their choice, and the information will surface in one interface.

“We are thrilled Follett has certified Aspen SIS to the Ed-Fi Data Standard,” said Troy Wheeler, president, Ed-Fi Alliance. “Aspen’s current and future customers will have more choices than ever when selecting technology programs and tools to support their learners. This certification demonstrates Follett’s commitment to interoperability and its forward-thinking approach to a thoughtful data architecture that empowers educators.”

Ed-Fi certifications allow product developers to demonstrate a product’s fidelity to Ed-Fi standards and guidelines, and for purchasers or users to be confident that a product conforms to those same Ed-Fi standards and guidelines. The program’s goal is to ensure that systems can inter-operate and exchange data using Ed-Fi standards and technology.

Aspen currently serves more than two million students throughout 240 school districts in the U.S. and Canada.
